October in Paonia can bring together a West Elks wine day, cider and live music at an orchard, and a meal connected to the local harvest. The best starting point is one experience you want to make time for. Then choose your travel dates, check what is open, and leave room between plans.

For October 2026, the weekend of October 9–11 offers several specific reasons to visit the North Fork Valley. Big B’s CiderFest runs Friday through Sunday in Hotchkiss, the Creamery Arts Center hosts an opening reception on Friday, and Thistle Whistle Farm has a harvest dinner on Sunday. These are separate events, so choose the ones that suit your group instead of trying to fit in everything.

Mountain Harvest Festival took place September 24–27, 2026. Its farm tours and festival program have ended; the October ideas below are a different way to enjoy the season. Our Past events page preserves those September listings for reference.

Friday, October 9: art in Hotchkiss or an evening at the orchard.

The Creamery Arts Center’s Interwoven opening reception is scheduled for October 9 from 5 to 8 pm at 165 W Bridge Street in Hotchkiss. Held during Hotchkiss Second Friday, the juried fiber arts exhibition brings together work such as weaving, quilting, embroidery, knitting, and felting.

Big B’s CiderFest also begins Friday evening at Delicious Orchards, 39126 Highway 133 in Hotchkiss. The organizer advertises three days of free live music alongside cider tastings, vendors, and food. Check its current schedule for individual performances and any separate costs before deciding when to arrive.

If your drive brings you in late, keep the first evening simple. Settle into your lodging, confirm the next day’s meeting point or reservations, and choose one evening stop. Arrange the ride back before any wine or cider tasting.

Saturday: give West Elks wine country its own time.

A wine day works best as a clear block of time. Tasting-room hours and appointment requirements vary by winery and season, so confirm access for your actual date. Leave space for rural driving, conversation, and a meal rather than assuming several stops will fit between fixed event times.

Western Colorado Wine Tour offers three-hour, five-hour, and private or custom formats. A three-hour tour can suit a shorter wine-country outing; five hours gives more room for longer stops or an optional food stop when available. The route is shaped around winery availability and the group’s plans.

Food is not included in the tour price. Tasting fees, wine purchases, and event admission are additional. Event transportation is a separate arrangement unless specifically confirmed, so share any evening plans when discussing your tour.

Sunday, October 11: choose a workshop, orchard visit or farm dinner.

CiderFest continues on Sunday. The organizer advertises a farmers market and kids’ activities as part of the festival, but check its current schedule for individual activity times before planning a morning visit. This year’s theme is disco, with free live music throughout the festival weekend.

For a hands-on alternative, The Storm Cellar’s Slow Drinks workshop runs October 11 from 11 am to 1 pm at 14139 Runzel Gulch Road in Hotchkiss. Winemaker Jayme Henderson leads seasonal cocktail-making activities; the ticket includes light appetizers and a copy of the featured book. Reservations are separate, children and pets cannot attend, and the covered outdoor setting calls for layers. Confirm ticket availability before setting your plans.

For a longer Sunday, Thistle Whistle Farm’s October 11 Harvest Dinner begins with a farm visit at 4 pm, a pepper tasting at 5 pm, and dinner at 6 pm. The farm is at 10872 3500 Road in Hotchkiss. Use the organizer’s RSVP form to confirm availability, price, and dietary arrangements before building the day around it.

The workshop, dinner and festival are independently organized. Allow time between venues and make a separate transportation plan; none is automatically part of a WCWT wine-tour booking.

If your trip extends into the week, the October 6 Produce Variety Tasting is advertised from 5 to 7 pm at Arbol Farmers Market in Paonia Town Park. It offers a chance to compare produce varieties with CSU’s Rogers Mesa research station. Follow the event’s own listing rather than assuming the wider market has identical hours throughout the season.
